Introducing the Maven World Cup Challenge

Do you need a fun new dataset to practice your data visualization skills?

Can't wait for the 2022 FIFA World Cup to get started?

We have just what you need, including another chance to win a free all-access membership to Maven Analytics!

We’ve just updated the World Cup dataset from the Data Playground to include data for this year's tournament, as well as all international matches outside of the World Cup.

This dataset is now perfect for showing off your data visualization and storytelling skills, whether that be on Excel, Power BI, Tableau, Python or other platforms!

To go along with this release, we’re launching the Maven World Cup Challenge and giving away a free all-access membership to the winner.

We’ll share more about the challenge details below, but first let’s talk about the data…

About the dataset

  • This dataset contains 6 tables in CSV format

  • The World Cups table outlines each World Cup in history, including the year, host country, and winner

  • The 2022 World Cup Groups table includes all the qualified countries for this year's World Cup, the group they were drawn to, and their FIFA Ranking

  • The 2022 World Cup Squads table includes the official squads for each team, inlcuding details on their goals and games with the national team

  • The 2022 World Cup Matches table contains the date and opponents for each of the 64 matches scheduled for the 2022 FIFA World Cup

  • The World Cup Matches table contains all the results from the previous editions of the World Cup

  • The International Matches table contains all the results from every international match in history outside of the World Cup for each qualified country

About the 2022 FIFA World Cup

Here's some context you may need into how the tournament plays out:

World Cup Groups

The 32 qualified countries are drawn into 8 groups with 4 teams each. For the initial group stage, each country plays the others in their group once (3 matches) and gets 3 points for a win, 1 for a draw, and 0 for a loss. Once the group stage ends, the two countries with the most points from each group advance to the round of 16.

World Cup Knock-outs

The bracket for the round of 16, and subsequent stages, is determined by splitting up the winner from each group and facing them off against the runner-up from another group.

The team that wins each match advances to the next round until a winner is crowned!

How to play the Maven World Cup Challenge

To participate in this challenge, your task is to choose a country to root for in the 2022 FIFA World Cup (it doesn't have to be your own!) and use data visualization to tell a single-page story of their history with the World Cup, their road to Qatar, and their expectations for this year's tournament.

Here’s how to submit your entry:

  1. Share a LinkedIn post mentioning @Maven Analytics and the hashtag #mavenworldcupchallenge, with your single-page visual based on the challenge objective above

  2. Complete the official challenge submission form to make sure you are entered for a chance to win

Make sure to follow Maven Analytics on LinkedIn for updates on the challenge and invite your connections to play along!

How to win

For the Maven World Cup Challenge, the Maven team will select a finalist entry for each country (16 max) based on insights, creativity, design, visualizations, and overall storytelling ability. From there, the finalists will be split up into a bracket, and the "countries" will face off via live voting from the Maven team until a winner is selected!

What you can win

As part of the Maven World Cup Challenge, we'll be giving away 1 annual all-access Maven membership completely free of charge. The winner will get access to all of our Excel, Power BI, Tableau, SQL, Python, and Machine Learning courses, all with direct support and coaching from our expert instructors.

No purchase is necessary to participate. As always, this challenge is open to both current Maven subscribers and everyone else.
