For this project I am playing the role of a BI Developer for National Rail, a company that provides business services to passenger train operators in England, Scotland, and Wales. The goal is to provide an exploratory dashboard that helps management to answer below questions:
I aimed to keep this dashboard simple and straightforward. I have created 3 pages in the report - Revenue analysis, Route Analysis and Performance Analysis.
Revenue Analysis - For this section of report I have used new card visual to show KPIs and then added supporting charts to show passenger demographics, revenue drivers and peak travel. Passenger demographics showcase simple crosstab to highlight that majority of passengers purchase tickets through online using credit cards. Revenue drivers highlights that maximum revenue is coming from standard tickets and most of the tickets purchased are in advance and off peak tickets in order to save on price. Clearly peak hour travel timings are morning 6am-8am and evening 4pm-6pm.
Route Analysis - For this section i have used Matrix visual to show all routes and major KPIs like no. of trips, Passengers, revenue, % train on time, % trains delayed and % trains cancelled for each route. this gives a clear idea of which route is generating more revenue and their performance. I have also added filters for departure and arrival stations if management want to filter matrix for specific route/station.
Performance Analysis - For this section, I have divided the canvas in 3 sections - On-Time, Delayed and Cancelled. This gives a clear view of performance of rail. Also how each journey status is affecting passengers and routes. Which are the major routes affected and what are the drivers for these delays and cancelled status.
Visuals/Color - The aim was to keep this report simple and easy to read. I have kept basic visuals - New Card, Matrix, tables, Column/Bar charts Line charts. Color used through out the report is blue (#094780) and grey(#E6E6E6) to give more professional feel.
